Medimex: in 2019 a double appointment in Puglia for the International Festival & Music Conference

The first names and events this year have been announced at the Berlin Tourism Fair

The Spring edition in Foggia (April 11-14) will feature the only Italian date of Bryan Ferry and a special project by Renzo Arbore with several great Italian jazz musicians. In Taranto (June 5-9) an exclusive concert of Patti Smith re-evokes the return of huge rock festivals forty years after the historic Bologna and Florence concerts of 1979

Renzo Arbore and Bryan Ferry in Foggia, Patti Smith in Taranto. Medimex doubles down in Puglia and announces the first names featured in the 2019 edition from ITB Berlin, the leading European tourism fair. From Thursday April 11 to Sunday April 14 a Spring edition will be held in Foggia, where Renzo Arbore will coordinate a special project created for Medimex with several great Italian jazz musicians, while the founder of Roxy Music will perform for the only Italian date on his world tour. From Wednesday June 5 to Sunday June 9 Medimex will return to Taranto and with a concert by Patti Smith will celebrate the forty years of the legendary concerts of Bologna and Florence in 1979, where the American artist’s participation heralded the return to Italy of large-scale rock concerts after a period of violence and unrest. Medimex confirms its international calling – and becomes even more important within a regional strategy – to reach out to an extra-regional and international public. The advance news was released during a press conference organized by Pugliapromotion at the ENIT stand, where the President of the Puglia Region, Michele Emiliano, and the Councillor for Tourism and Cultural Industries, Loredana Capone, presented the Puglia tourism strategy to the international audience of the German fair. During the press conference, the coordinator of Puglia Sounds/Medimex, Cesare Veronico, then unveiled the names of the artists and news of the upcoming International Festival & Music Conference promoted by Puglia Sounds, the program of the Puglia Region for the development of the regional music system implemented with the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese (Puglia Public Theatre), the go-to event for the Italian music market and a huge audience of fans.

“Puglia is now a preferred destination of international tourism and we could not pass up this fair in Berlin. For the first time we combine a tourist offer with a cultural offer, and around the great events we are presenting we have created new travel opportunities to our region, from Gargano to Salento, every month of the year. This is an innovative strategy that has already begun to deliver exceptional results: we are the Italian region with the largest increase in foreign tourist arrivals; we have no plans to stop either, and we still have a long way to go to reach the ambitious goals we set for ourselves with the Puglia365 Strategic Plan, our work is rewarding us,” said President Michele Emiliano. “Moreover, cultural and commercial relations between Germany and Puglia are very profitable: we want to promote German tourism in Puglia and invest in cultural exchanges, research and innovation.”

“We are taking part in this important international fair with tourist and cultural operators in Puglia and we have a very full programme of events in Puglia from April to September, in addition to all our other qualities – a unique landscape, a mild climate, a wealth of beautiful small towns and our heritage of excellent food and wine. Puglia is a passionate and ambitious region and is working hard, in harmony with both the public and private sectors, to be attractive all year round, through great shows, festivals and events,” says the Councillor for Tourism and Cultural Industry, Loredana Capone. “Germany has always been Puglia’s prime market of incoming tourists (21% of the Puglia tourist market). In 2018, arrivals in Puglia grew by +5% over the previous year. German tourists want a more refined and integrated travel experience, embracing sea, nature and culture. It is precisely this integrated offer that we are presenting today in Berlin. The offers include a large number of direct flights between Puglia and 11 German cities.”

“Medimex 2019 continues to focus on the future and innovation and celebrates the extraordinary events of 1969 that were so revolutionary that they are still relevant today,” comments Cesare Veronico, “and they become a common thread that unites the two editions and helps us understand what is happening in music and culture today.”

The Spring edition scheduled in Foggia from Thursday April 11 to Sunday April 14 reinforces the itinerant calling of the event launched last year and is the fruit of the Puglia Region’s de-seasonalization policies; a rich program of events have been organised in the most symbolic areas of the city, starting with the two free live events in Piazza Cavour, Renzo Arbore’s special project on Friday April 12 and the Bryan Ferry concert on Saturday April 13, the only Italian date of the world tour that the British artist will kick off a few days after the induction of Roxy Music in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The two events are, in fact, part of an articulated program that includes other concerts and meetings with Italian and international guests, exhibitions, music schools, collateral activities and an important tribute to the Beatles fifty years after the band’s break-up. After Foggia, Medimex returns to Taranto from Wednesday June 5 to Sunday June 9 – as announced at the end of the 2018 edition – with a dense program of concerts by international artists (numerous headliners will be announced in the coming weeks), meetings with the protagonists of Italian music, professional and networking activities aimed at regional and national artists and music operators, music schools, DJ sets, exhibitions, the traditional vinyl LP market, screenings, collateral activities and a meaningful 50th-anniversary celebration of Woodstock, the American festival that in 1969 heralded the season of massive rock festivals, which in the following years disappeared from Italy due to violence and public unrest and resumed only in 1979 – precisely with the memorable concerts of Patti Smith in Bologna and Florence. These events will be re-evoked on Sunday June 9 by the American singer-songwriter, a true icon of rock music, with the only Italian concert of the artist and her band on the summer tour, on the stage of the Rotonda del Lungomare in Taranto.

The complete programs of the Medimex Spring edition in Foggia and Medimex in Taranto will be announced in the coming weeks. Constant updates are available on the website www.medimex.it.
