MEDIMEX 2019 closes with 80,000 attendees in Taranto and with the eyes already turned to next year. The President of the Regione Puglia Michele Emiliano has made a first important announcement: Taranto will host the 2020 edition. And for the first time ever, next year Medimex will land in Brindisi. A Spring edition, from 19 to 26 April, which will realize the vision of Medimex as a travelling festival that year after year offers to all the territories of Puglia an extraordinary opportunity of growth through music. For the just ended International Festival & Music Conference, not only a boom in admissions, with sold outs in hotels and restaurants, but also record numbers on the social media with 2,608,571 contacts on Facebook, Twitter and Instragram and a great coverage by the media. These were extraordinary days for Taranto, which after last year’s experience has confirmed to be the capital of music, a landmark on the scene of major music events and a very welcoming and friendly town which has seen 97% of the rooms of its accommodation facilities booked during MEDIMEX 2019. It was a crescendo in music and attendance, starting with the concerts on the main stage on the Rotonda del Lungomare, where an unforgettable weekend was spent with the concerts of Cigarettes After Sex, Editors, Liam Gallagher and Patti Smith, and backing artists Julielle, JoyCut, King Hammond & The Rude Boy Mafia, Sound of Garden and Kalascima, and the dj sets of Virgin Radio with Ringo and Toky and the eldest of the Gallagher brothers, Paul Anthony. And then, new to this edition, the two days of live shows at the Villa Peripato which gathered thousands of fans for the performances of Clock DVA, Giunto di Cardano, James Senese with Napoli Centrale, Ensi and Johnny Marisiglia, Gio Evan with Roberto Dellera & Enrico Gabrielli, the Woodstock Special Project Band, La Municipàl and the Asian Dub Foundation. Villa Peripato was also turned into a citadel of music with the Medimex Music Market feat Independent Label Market and the Woodstock lecture by Ernesto Assante and Giovanni Canitano. All queueing up for the “Meet the Author” events and for the talks at the University headquarters with some leading personalities of Italian music scene, from Piero Pelù to Motta, Mezzosangue, Frankie hi nrg and Franco 126 and the protagonists of two Medimex events, photographer Baron Wolman, co-author with David Silverstein of the unpublished photo exhibition on Woodstock and Jimi Hendrix open until June 28, and rock icon Patti Smith. In the main hall, the artist recounted her story to an overflowing crowd, rewarded with her thrilling a cappella interpretation of “Because the Night”, then sung on the stage at the Rotonda del Lungomare for the closing concert on Sunday, June 9, during which Patti Smith thanked Taranto and expressed her support and willingness to fight at their side. So, MEDIMEX, which also “made a stop” at the Teatro Fusco with two preview evenings, has swarmed legions of visitors in the old town, where, in addition to the Meet the Author events, there were other gatherings on schedule between the University, the Istituto Musicale Paisello and the Caffè Letterario Cibo per la Mente. These events hosted professional activities for operators and professionals of the music market, music classes and book presentations. For MEDIMEX is not only great concerts and international guests, but also an unmissable opportunity of growth for the Apulian music industry. More than 500 artists and representatives of Apulian music businesses have attended the Puglia Sounds Musicarium, the Songwriting Camp, the workshops and the face-to-face(s) with leading lecturers and representatives of major international festivals. MEDIMEX also got a great deal of attention from social networks, which more than tripled their numbers compared to last year. According to this year’s figures, 2,608,571 people were reached on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, with 145,208 interactions and 16,635 posts with the hashtags #Medimex2019 and #Medimex on Twitter and Instagram. The fallout in terms of tourism has also been important.
