MEDIMEX sets sail again, driven by the dream, the ritual, the idea and the craft.
The 2023 edition of MEDIMEX takes place in Taranto. The programme is spread across 10 venues in the city: the University of Bari – Ionian Department, Teatro Fusco, Castello Aragonese, the “G. Paisiello” Higher Institute of Musical Studies, MArTA (National Archaeological Museum of Taranto), Caffè Letterario, Spazioporto, Rotonda del Lungomare, Stazione 37 and StudioGaudio Recording. All from 13 to 18 June.
The University becomes the main venue of the Conference, with 11 events on the programme. 7 panels: support for new generations; the live market; music without physical formats; the singer-songwriter tradition; rights and digital innovation; European funding; music in the age of TikTok. 1 One to One session with Creative Europe Desk Italia. 2 networking sessions for the showcase artists. 1 closed-door table at which representatives of the Puglia, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Sicily regions discuss Music Commissions.
At MArTA, the exhibition “Perfect day: Lou Reed e la New York di Andy Warhol” (Lou Reed and Andy Warhol’s New York), marking 10 years since Lou Reed’s death. On show are shots by many photographers, including Mick Rock, Steve Schapiro, Nat Finkelstein, Stephen Shore, Ronn Spencer, Adam Ritchie and Allan Tannenbaum.
In the former chapel at the University, the “Vintage Drum Show” displays more than 150 drum kits, 300 snare drums and 300 historic cymbals, plus other memorabilia, from the private collection of Antonio Di Lorenzo, one of the world’s leading drum experts. The “G. Paisiello” Higher Institute of Musical Studies hosts the lessons of the Medimex Music Factory, run in collaboration with Sony Music Publishing Italy. The tutors are Rossella Essence, Marco Maiole, Edoardo Castroni, Rootsie, Valeria Palmitessa, Leonardo Zaccaria, VV, Vincenzo Colella, Piero Romitelli, Alberto Bianco, Pasquale Catalano, Michele Braga and Ginevra Nervi. The last three names launch the soundtrack class, music for film.
Puglia Sounds Musicarium hosts courses in podcasting (Teo Filippo Cremonini and Gabriele Beretta); recording and mixing (Marc Urselli); sound engineering (Antonio Porcelli); live show design (Carlo Pastore); live video for large events (Fabio dell’Anna); photography (Giovanni Canitano).
At MArTA, for Incontri & Racconti (formerly Incontri d’Autore), Ernesto Assante and Gino Castaldo talk with the American guitarist Steve Hunter (who played with Alice Cooper and Lou Reed). Four more events at the Teatro Fusco, hosted by Assante and Castaldo, welcome Simona Molinari in “Burt Bacharach, the great heart of song”; Tullio De Piscopo and Valentina Magaletti in “Drum Summit”; Baustelle in “Lucio Battisti, the birthday of the great Italian song”; and Serena Brancale in “The queens of Black Music, from Tina Turner to Aretha Franklin to Beyoncé”.

14 artists play showcases at Spazioporto, with Aldo di Caterino, Satoyama, Simone Basile Quintet, Michele Bonifati Emong and Daykoda. Nine of them, selected from the beneficiaries of Puglia Sounds Record, are Vienna, Meschino, Lauryyn, Leea Clem, Rossana De Pace, Freud’s Fraud, Salento All Star, Macro and Trevor. The programme also includes the live set “Dr. Kiko – A memorial” with Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai and Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals.
The Caffè Letterario hosts 3 book presentations: the Medimex Book Stories continue.
9 live concerts on the Rotonda del Lungomare with Diodato, Echo & The Bunnymen, Larocca, Skunk Anansie, The Murder Capital, Red Room, The Cult, Tom Morello and Wepro.
The façade of the Castello Aragonese hosts the projection mapping show “il Rito, l’Idea, il Mestiere ed il Sogno” (the Ritual, the Idea, the Craft and the Dream) by Roberto Santoro and Blending Pixels.
Stazione 37 hosts the final of the Next Generation Award with Marco Redshot, Gea and Il Preso Male. MEDIMEX radio broadcasts every day from the University.
