Bab L’Bluz, (literally “The door of the blues”) is a French-Moroccan group formed in 2018 in Marrakech. The band is inspired by traditional Gnawa and Hassani music, combining rock, psychedelic sounds and blues. The project was born from the meeting of the charismatic Yousra Mansour (vocals, awisha, percussion and guembri), who grew up in the city of El Jadida on the Atlantic coast of Morocco listening to the Lebanese diva Fairouz, the Gnawa music of nearby Essaouira, but also Janis Joplin, Oumou Sangaré and Erykah Badu, and the Frenchman Brice Bottin (guembri, guitar, percussion and backing vocals) in Marrakech at the beginning of 2017. Both passionate about Gnawa music, they decided to learn together to play the guembri, a plucked string instrument from the musical tradition of those peoples. They wanted to combine their influences in a refined way, respecting the analog world that emerged in the 60s and 70s, thus giving life to the composition of a new repertoire.
La Niña, Bab L’Bluz and Magalí Datzira are the three artists chosen by Antonio Diodato for Le strade del Mediterraneo, the special project created for Medimex. Three extraordinary female voices, interpreters of the sound and cultural atmospheres of the Mediterranean area, to explore the theme of the Road, which this year is the thematic thread of Medimex, through the perspective and identity of the sea. The sea as the main centuries-old connection between peoples, cultures and music of the world, with Taranto as a safe and regenerating port of arrival.
