Billie Holiday: Chasing the Scream

Section

By and with Roberto Ottaviano. With Patrizia Conte, DJ Rocca

A musical and narrative journey into the tormented and luminous heart of Billie Holiday. Roberto Ottaviano, one of the most profound interpreters of European jazz, intertwines his instrumental voice with readings, anecdotes and reflections inspired by the book Chasing the Scream by Johann Hari. The narration follows the trail of a scream — the scream — that runs through Billie’s story: the pain of childhood, racial discrimination, addiction, but also the unmistakable voice, the poetic resistance, the poignant beauty of songs like Strange Fruit and God Bless the Child. Alongside Ottaviano’s saxophone, the intense and visceral voice of Patrizia Conte, immersed in a non-mainstream sound context but transposed into a contemporary dimension, where electronics, drum’n’bass and loops merge. The musical landscape comes to life thanks to the interventions and rhythmic visions of DJ Rocca, who animates the story with digital textures and pressing grooves. An act of love, of memory, of denunciation. A concert that is also theater, history, poetry. A cry that still today asks us to listen.
