Charles Moriarty is the photographer who captured Amy Winehouse before her fame, or Before Frank, with intimate and vibrant shots. Born in Dublin and raised in London, his style mixes delicacy and authenticity. With a sensitive and personal gaze, Moriarty has built over the years a visual archive that tells the story of the identity, fragility and strength of his subjects, always on the border between the everyday and the iconic.
Charles Moriarty is originally from Dublin, but moved to London at the age of 18. In 2003 he began working as a still photographer in the music industry and London social scene.
Shortly after, in 2004, he specialized in the field of ocular medical illustration and worked in several hospitals in Ireland and England. From 2009 to 2012 he was a specialist photographer at Moorfield Hospital, managing the paediatric photography department. He has worked with Amy Winehouse, Hercules and Love Affair, TATE, British College of Music, USB, VICE, DIESEL, KTZ, Aitor Throup, Damon Albarn, 1814 Magazine, Flaunt Magazine, High Snobiety, Lee Roach, Benjamin O’Mahoney, Phoenix Magazine, Natt&Dag, METRO and many more.
In 2014 he worked for Lucas Film as a stills department head for Star Wars Episode VII, The Force Awakens. In 2017 he self-published his first book, Before Frank, revealing for the first time many of his previously unseen photographs of Amy Winehouse. In 2018 the book was re-released by Octopus Publishing, under the new title Back to Amy, on 4 October, with over 50 new photographs added and in-depth interviews with people close to Amy, including her mother Janis. In 2020 he published the acclaimed X; Ten Years of Male Photography, followed shortly after in 2021 by Photographers on the Art of Photography, published by ACC Art Books.
His work is in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery. In 2022 Charles was shortlisted for the British Photography Magazine Portrait of Humanity award and his work was selected for the Royal Hibernian Academy summer exhibition in Ireland. He is represented by Iconic Images and the exhibition BOYS! BOYS! BOYS! of the Little Black Gallery.
