Starting from the essay “Monsters. Distinguishing or not distinguishing lives from works. “The torment of fans”, by Claire Dederer (Italian edition 2024 Iperborea/Il Post), we explore the dynamics of influence and power that generate the absolute success of some artistic personalities, especially if they are clearly famous, to the point of suspending any judgment on their actions committed in private life, even in the case of serious crimes, such as rape, paedophilia etc., and even in the case of convictions. Is it right to idolize a human being for his cultural creations, even if he then proves to have little “human”? What makes an artist a monster and do the same measures apply to everyone? In this second Equaly meeting on the topic, launched at the Milan Music Week 2024 and inspired by Dederer’s essay, we try to investigate the, or rather, the double standards.
