Deeply connected to his Calabrian roots, Davide Ambrogio has drawn inspiration from the oral tradition of his native Aspromonte to create his own musical language from this ancient heritage. Following his extraordinary debut album, “Evocazioni e Invocazioni,” which explores Calabrian ritual music (winner of the Loano Giovani National Prize, the Musica contro le Mafie Prize, the Ethnos Gener/Azioni Prize 2020, the World Music Chart Europe, and Songlines magazine’s Top of the World Album), and numerous concerts (in Italy, France, Portugal, Spain, Malta, and India), Davide Ambrogio presents his new album, Mater Nullius.

Mater Nullius is a work that explores the disconnect between contemporary humanity and nature, and the need for human and spiritual rebirth. Through a narrative that blends music and research, the Calabrian artist tells a story of inner transformation, symbolized by a dialogue between the rationality of modern man and his unconscious, primitive, archetypal, and savage side. The musical heart of Mater Nullius stems from a reinterpretation of the sonic code used during the Holy Week rituals in southern Italy, adapted in this album to narrate the protagonist’s journey of transformation. The “instruments of darkness” of the Christian Easter tradition (drums, troccole, and chains) blend with modern voices and sounds, creating a stark contrast between the acoustic and electronic worlds. The 14 Stations of the Cross thus become a metaphor for the protagonist’s inner journey: a modern Western man confronting a profound crisis through an encounter with his primordial self.
