Davide Shorty is a singer-songwriter, rapper, and producer from Palermo who blends his soulful voice with melodies influenced by jazz and rap. He is best known for his appearances on X Factor in 2015, where he finished third, and in 2021 at Sanremo, among the Newcomers, where he placed second and won the Lucio Dalla Press Room Award, the Lunezia Award, and the Jannacci Award from Nuovo IMAIE, thus becoming the most awarded artist of the edition. Davide has been based in London for 15 years, and in addition to national collaborations with Funk Shui Project, Daniele Silvestri, Tormento, Claver Gold, Johnny Marsiglia, and many other exponents of the hip hop and other scenes, he has also received recognition from international artists such as Madonna and the famous pianist Robert Glasper.
DECYPHER is a writing workshop created by Davide Shorty, an inclusive environment open to rappers, songwriters, and solo musicians, where they can express themselves instinctively. The cypher (circle) format originates from hip-hop culture: rappers gather in a circle to take turns performing their rhymes. The word “decipher” means “to decipher,” which is the goal of the workshop: deciphering personal meanings and finding one’s artistic voice through collective sharing.
In the first part of the meeting, Davide discusses his journey and aims to create a dynamic dialogue with the students about the Italian and international music scene, shedding light on the goals each artist can set for themselves. After this warm-up, the workshop gets into the heart of the matter, starting with the composition of a beat or backing track, where Davide will demonstrate sampling techniques on Logic Pro X with the students’ help. Once a beat and a mood have been created, a theme is chosen to develop: in 40 minutes, all participants, including Davide, will have the opportunity to try their hand at writing at least eight bars of a verse or chorus. At the end of the writing process, and with feedback from Davide Shorty, a cypher (a circle) will be created, a jam session in which everyone will perform their part, one after the other. The cypher can also include soloists who wish to play their own instrument, and not just rappers or singer-songwriters.
